KEEP IT COOL THIS SUMMER

Use fans first when cooling your space.

These tips will help you keep cool and save energy this summer.

  • Use fans first. You'll feel more comfortable while using less energy when you use fans to circulate the air and create cooling breezes. Save even more when you purchase Energy Star rated models!
  • When fans aren't enough, use Energy Star qualified room air conditioners, which use as much as 25 to 40 percent less energy depending on the age of the unit being replaced.
  • It's just as important to make sure that your air conditioning unit is the right size. Under- or Oversized units cool less efficiently and effectively leading to additional wear and tear and a shorter unit life.
  • Keep your windows shaded, especially those facing south, by keeping curtains and blinds closed during the day to keep out the heat of the sun. Did you know shading from the outside keeps out even more summer heat? Install retractable awnings or plant deciduous trees and shrubs to shade windows in the summer, but let in that free heat in the winter!
  • Turn off unneeded lights and unplug unused electronics to avoid adding waste heat to your spaces.
  • Avoid using heat producing appliances like washers, dryers, dishwashers and ovens during the heat of the day whenever possible. You'll save energy and keep cooler by using these appliances in the morning and evening when the cooling and electricity demands are lower.

DELIVER SUBMITTALS ELECTRONICALLY
This month's tip is courtesy of July's Green Tip submission winner, Mark Nestorowich of Lightspec. Mark suggested delivering all material and equipment submittals electronically via either email or digital email to significantly reduce paper use and waste on construction projects.
