Have you taken the pledge?  As part of the Buffalo-Niagara Earth Day 2009 Initiative, CIR has pledged to encourage all of our employees to carpool, bike, walk or take public transportation to work on Earth Day, this coming Wednesday, April 22nd, to help demonstrate WNY's commitment to going green.  Visit http://www.buffaloearthday.com/ to take the pledge as an individual or on behalf of your organization.  The website also includes a direct link to Good Going WNY, the Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transportation Council's website for information on alternative transportation, including a carpool-matching program.

I'll be leaving my car at home on Earth Day.  Since I have a tricky schedule with work, school and mom duties, I've arranged to work from home that day.  My daughter takes the school bus in the morning, and then I can take the NFTA-METRO bus to UB South Campus for my afternoon class.  Since we live less than a mile from my daughter's school, I can take the same bus route back to pick her up from the after school program, and we can walk home, or if it rains, there's another bus we can take for that eighth of a mile.  It's a bit complicated, and I'll get my exercise for the day, but I think it's worth it!

While we're on the subject of alternative transportation, earlier this month Buffalo CarShare announced that they are preparing for a May launch of their program.  For those not familiar with the concept, car sharing programs allow members to rent a car at an hourly rate for things like grocery shopping or other errands that are cumbersome when you rely on walking, biking, or public transportation.  The Buffalo CarShare program was spearheaded by some of my colleagues at UB, and it will provide Western New Yorkers a convenient, reliable and affordable alternative to car ownership.  Visit http://www.buffalocarshare.org/ for more information about the program and be sure to attend:

HOW TO GREEN YOUR HOLIDAY DECOR
Make your own ornaments and decorations. Once upon a time, decorating the home and tree was a family event, why not bring that back? Go on a scavenger hunt with the kids and find items around the house and the yard that can be `recycled` into holiday ornaments. It will provide hours of family fun, and when you use as many `found` objects as possible, you'll be teaching the kids how to reduce, reuse and recycle at the same time!

Think green when decorating for your holiday festivities by following these tips.
